Statistical Report Highlights Ageing Population, Migration Trends, and Rising Divorce Rates

The population in the Government-controlled area of Cyprus was estimated at 966,400 at the end of 2023, up from 949,100 at the end of 2022, marking a 1.8% increase, according to demographic statistics published by the Statistical Service.

In 2023, 15.3% of the population were children under 15 years, while 17.7% were aged 65 and above, compared to 22.3% and 11.3% in 2000. The gradual increase in the proportion of older individuals and the decline in the proportion of children highlight the ageing process of Cyprus' population.

  • Births in 2023: Increased to 10,241 from 10,187 in 2022, with a crude birth rate of 10.7 per 1,000 population.

  • Total Fertility Rate: Remained at 1.4, below the replacement level of 2.1 since 1995, down from a peak of 2.5 in 1982.

  • Mean Age of Mothers: 30 years for the first child; 31.5 years for births of all orders.

  • Deaths in 2023: Decreased to 6,742 from 7,307 in 2022, with a crude death rate of 7 per 1,000 population.

  • Life Expectancy: Estimated at 81 years for males and 85 years for females, up from 80.2 and 83.9 years in 2022.

  • Infant Mortality Rate: Increased to 4.5 per 1,000 live births from 3.3 in 2022.

Migration Trends

Net migration in Cyprus has been positive since 2016, following a period of negative net migration from 2012 to 2015.

  • Net Migration in 2023: Estimated at 13,782, with 40,761 long-term immigrants (Cypriots and foreigners) arriving for settlement or employment, compared to 37,558 in 2022.

  • Emigrants: Increased to 26,979 in 2023 from 21,118 in 2022.

Marriages and Divorces
  • Marriages in 2023: Decreased to 11,766 from 13,350 in 2022.

    • Ecclesiastical marriages dropped to 4,355 from 4,486.

    • Civil marriages fell to 7,411 from 8,864, with only 2,076 civil marriages involving Cyprus residents.

  • Divorces in 2023: Increased to 2,134, compared to 1,503 in 2022.

    • Crude divorce rate: 2.23 per 1,000 population in 2023, up from 1.60 in 2022.

    • Total divorce rate: 347.8 per 1,000 marriages, a significant rise from 41.6 in 1980.
