CNN has recommended 24 of the most enticing tourist destinations for the year 2024, and among them is a region in Greece. In 2023, several popular destinations faced issues of overtourism, including Athens, primarily due to the Acropolis. CNN now suggests 24 global destinations that are beautifully scenic and less known, avoiding the issues of overcrowding. Representing Greece in this list is the region of Macedonia.

Athens and the Greek islands are becoming increasingly crowded each year, but in Northern Greece, the region of Macedonia remains relatively free from the challenges of overtourism, as noted by CNN. However, it possesses all the attributes sought by visitors from both within Greece and internationally: archaeological sites, cities rich in history, and abundant beaches.

Macedonia was the land of Alexander the Great. His father, Philip II of Macedon, is buried in Vergina, where his tomb has been transformed into a museum of global renown. Nearby are Byzantine ruins in the city of Veria, perched on a hilltop, and exceptional wineries in the hills around Naoussa.

Thessaloniki, the report continues, is a gastronomic hub, as well as a melting pot of architectural styles and archaeological epochs. Close to the city are the sandy beaches of Chalkidiki and, towards the border with Thrace, significant archaeological sites such as ancient Philippi and the city of Kavala, with its visible Ottoman past.
