The Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has extended an invitation to Cypriot businesses to submit bids for the construction of the Jordan-Iraq Economic City.

This call to Cypriot enterprises follows a decision by the Iraqi Jordanian Company for Industry—a joint venture between the governments of Jordan and Iraq—to invite local and international companies to bid on building the economic city located between Jordan and Iraq.

The project is ambitious in scope, with the economic city set to be constructed over an area of 22 million square meters (2,200 hectares), spanning the border between Jordan and Iraq.

Brief contacted professionals in the construction sector to discuss whether Cypriot businesses could feasibly submit bids for a project of such magnitude.

It was reported that while Cypriot companies have been and are active in international projects, a venture of this size would likely necessitate consortia for successful implementation.

It is important to note that the Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (OEB) has already sent out the bid invitations to its members.

The creation of the economic city aims to attract investments and provide employment opportunities for Jordanian and Iraqi workers.

According to "The Jordan Times," the joint economic city between Iraq and Jordan will bolster trade relations and create job opportunities. An economist speaking to "The Jordan Times" highlighted that Iraq is a critical market for Jordan. The establishment of this joint economic city is expected to spur economic growth, joint investments, and business ventures.

"Joint projects between Arab countries, like this economic city, are seen as forms of cooperation between the two nations and serve them well," the economist noted, adding that creating an economic zone on the border between the two countries is an ideal path towards economic integration.

It's noteworthy that the Iraqi market imports significant quantities of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals from Jordan.
