Urgent Decision on Marina Authority Looms for Cyprus Government
The Committee Continued Its Discussion on Mr. Hadjiyianni’s Proposal, Which Foresees Transferring This Authority to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Trade Committee, Kyriakos Hadjiyianni, has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Cyprus government to declare its stance on the competent authority for marinas. He added that the state services are "quarreling among themselves" over this matter.
The committee continued its discussion on Mr. Hadjiyianni's proposal, which foresees transferring this authority to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.
In statements following the session, Mr. Hadjiyianni expressed the need for the executive branch to finally make some decisions. "Regrettably, we gave them 15 days, but they came back a month later with just one thing to say: which authority they want to oversee the marinas in Cyprus. This policy is absolutely essential. Nonetheless, they are fighting amongst themselves, failing to agree or communicate, resulting in no proposal from the government about the authority they want to manage this significant asset," he stated.
He further pointed out that billions have been invested in Cypriot marinas, representing "a huge potential for maritime tourism."
When asked about the next steps, Mr. Hadjiyianni said that if the government does not present its position within 15 days, "we will vote on a proposal for the competent authority to be the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to develop all the prerequisites of this special sector."
"If they wish, they then have the option to refer this specific legislation back. We can't wait with unresolved matters," he concluded.
