Agreement Finalized for Prometheus Departure; Certification Expected in Mediterranean
Prometheus Vessel Set to Depart Shanghai
An agreement has been reached, at least for the initial phase concerning the delivery of natural gas to Cyprus. According to sources from Brief, the deal required for the departure of the Prometheus vessel from Shanghai is now secured.
Specifically, involved parties are expected to finalize procedural details regarding the ship's crew, effectively clearing the way for the vessel to set sail toward the Mediterranean. This move is anticipated within the coming weeks.
The main remaining tasks now involve planning the vessel’s journey and determining its final port destination.
As previously reported, the Ministry of Energy aims for the Prometheus vessel to reach a Mediterranean country where it can be certified as a floating regasification unit. This strategy would prevent delays associated with constructing infrastructure in Vasilikos, allowing the vessel to receive certification more efficiently.
Candidate countries with the necessary infrastructure for certifying the Prometheus include Greece, Egypt, and Italy, with Egypt reportedly considered the most suitable by officials.
Another significant consideration is the route Prometheus will take to reach the Mediterranean. Geopolitical tensions, particularly involving potential transit through the Red Sea amid Houthi attacks, could pose risks to the vessel’s safety. Therefore, an alternative route remains an option, which could extend the duration of the journey to the Mediterranean.
