Nicosia Becomes Cyprus' First City in the MCR2030 Initiative
The inclusion of Nicosia marks Cyprus as the 86th country to join the initiative, which currently includes 1,677 cities worldwide.
Nicosia has become the first city in Cyprus to join the global network of Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030), according to an announcement by the Nicosia Municipality. The MCR2030 is a global initiative led by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) aimed at helping cities enhance their resilience to disasters and climate risks by 2030.
The inclusion of Nicosia marks Cyprus as the 86th country to join the initiative, which currently includes 1,677 cities worldwide. The municipality highlighted that this milestone reflects Nicosia's commitment to strengthening disaster resilience and fostering sustainable urban development, reinforcing its role as a city prepared to tackle 21st-century challenges.
Through its participation in MCR2030, Nicosia gains access to tools designed to improve its capacity to assess and enhance disaster risk management. The program also provides training opportunities, knowledge sharing, and collaboration with experts and other cities in the network, enabling the city to improve the skills of stakeholders involved in disaster resilience efforts.
As part of Nicosia's integration into the program, a training event was held featuring international speakers. Over 120 participants attended, exchanging best practices from other cities within the network. This collaboration strengthens Nicosia’s ability to implement innovative solutions to urban challenges.
"The cooperation and support of local and international stakeholders will allow Nicosia to continue evolving into a modern, safe, and innovative city, ready to meet the challenges of the future," the Municipality stated in its announcement.
