Proposal for University Establishment in Famagusta Gains Momentum

Local Leaders Advocate for Academic, Cultural, and Economic Boost

The Education Committee of the Cyprus Parliament is set to discuss the establishment of a university in the free Famagusta District, addressing a long-standing demand from the local community. The initiative, supported by all district MPs, aims to address the absence of higher education institutions in the region.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education, local government officials, and university rectors will attend the session. Discussions will focus on the government's intentions and the potential impact of such an establishment on the district's development. Education Minister Athina Michaelidou has indicated that bringing a university to the district is a government priority under President Nikos Christodoulides.

Speaking to OffsiteNews, Paralimni-Deryneia Mayor George Nikolettos emphasized the region’s readiness to host a university, citing its proximity to Larnaca International Airport, low living costs, developed tourism infrastructure, and ample employment opportunities for students. The absence of a university in Famagusta makes this proposal essential, aiming to enhance academic, cultural, and economic opportunities.

Community Advocacy

The youth of Famagusta have released a promotional video highlighting the advantages of establishing a university in the area. Regional Governor Yiannis Karousos shared the video, advocating for the cause.

Mayor Nikolettos stated, “We hope the government will support this initiative and address the long-standing inequity compared to other districts. A university will rejuvenate our region and contribute to its growth.”
