Cypriots Rate Life Satisfaction at 7.2/10 in 2022, Eurostat Reports

An Insight into the Life Satisfaction Ratings of Cyprus and EU Citizens in 2022

In 2022, Cypriots rated their life satisfaction at an average of 7.2 out of 10, closely aligning with the European Union average. This statistic comes from the Eurostat's index of subjective well-being, a part of its data collection on income and living conditions.

Specifically, in 2022, EU citizens (aged 16 and above), asked to rate their overall satisfaction with life on a scale from 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied), responded with an average score of 7.1.

In 18 of the 27 EU member states, citizens rated their life satisfaction on average above (in 16 countries) or equal to (in two countries) the EU average.

The highest average ratings were recorded in Austria (7.9), Finland, Poland, and Romania (7.7 for each country), and Belgium and the Netherlands (7.6 for each country).

The lowest average ratings were found in Bulgaria (5.6), Germany (6.5), and Greece (6.7).

Compared to 2021, Cyprus's index showed an increase of 0.4 points (from 6.8). In the other two years for which data are available, the index was 6.2 in 2013 and 7.1 in 2018.

At the EU level, the index is relatively stable over the four years for which data exist: 7.0 in 2013, 7.3 in 2018, 7.2 in 2021, and 7.1 in 2022.

Life satisfaction can be influenced by many factors, such as age, education level, family and financial status, as well as an individual's variety of experiences, choices, priorities, and values.

Interestingly, life satisfaction steadily and gradually decreases with each age group. In Cyprus, it drops from 7.6 (individuals aged 16-19), 7.5 (16-24), and 7.5 (16-29) to 7.5 (20-24), 7.4 (25-29 and 25-34), 7.2 (25-64 and 35-49), 7.0 (50-64), 6.9 (65-74), 6.8 (65 and over), and 6.6 (75 and over).

In the EU, the ratings by age group start from 7.7 and 7.4 for the three youngest age groups, decreasing to 6.7 for those aged 75 and above.
