Polys V. Hajioannou Elected President of the Cyprus Union of Shipowners

Safe Bulkers CEO takes over from Andreas Hadjiyiannis.

The Cyprus Union of Shipowners (CUS) held its General Assembly and board elections in Limassol on Monday, during the “Maritime Cyprus 2025” international conference, marking a significant moment for the island’s shipping industry.

Polys V. Hajioannou, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Safe Bulkers Inc., was elected as the new President of the Union, succeeding Andreas Hadjiyiannis.

Hajioannou, a prominent figure in international shipping with decades of experience, has been a founding member and Vice-President of the Union of Cyprus Shipowners since its inception.

Hajioannou has led Safe Bulkers, a NYSE-listed company, since 2008 and also serves with Safe Bulkers Management Ltd. in Cyprus. His leadership experience spans international maritime organizations, including past service on the boards of the Union of Greek Shipowners, Lloyd’s Register Hellenic Advisory Committee, and major mutual insurance associations in Bermuda and the UK.

During the General Assembly, Deputy Minister of Shipping Marina Hadjimanoli attended and congratulated the newly elected board. In her address, she reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining close cooperation with the shipping industry.
