ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and Canadian Commercial Corporation sign MoU to boost innovation and sustainability in space and environmental monitoring.

The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday with the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), marking a major step in international cooperation for Earth Observation and space technologies. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou.

According to a press release issued by CUT, the MoU sets the groundwork for exploring commercial partnerships in Earth Observation and space-related technologies, leveraging CCC’s mandate as Canada’s official government-to-government contracting agency. The agreement is designed to facilitate access to Canadian mapping systems, advanced analytics tools, technical expertise, and solutions.

Boosting Regional Leadership in Space Technologies

The collaboration aligns with the mission of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence to serve as a regional hub for Earth Observation data and analytics across the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa (EMMENA) region. The partnership is expected to enhance Cyprus’ role in the global space and environmental monitoring ecosystem.

The press release underscores the shared commitment of Cyprus and Canada to advancing global capabilities in Earth Observation, environmental monitoring, and space innovation, emphasizing the value of international partnerships that promote sustainable development.

Official Remarks Highlight Strategic Importance

The MoU was signed by Anna-Karine Asselin, High Commissioner of Canada to Cyprus, on behalf of the CCC, and Professor Diofantos Hadjimitsis on behalf of the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence. Dr. Nicodemos Damianou attended the event as an official representative of the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking at the signing, Deputy Minister Damianou emphasized that the agreement represents a shared vision for innovation-driven collaboration between the two countries. “By fostering cooperation in high-tech sectors like Earth Observation and geospatial intelligence, we are laying the foundation for a long-term partnership that draws on our respective strengths in science, technology, and trade, delivering tangible benefits to both societies,” he said.

Ambassador Asselin noted the MoU underscores the strong and evolving relationship between Canada and Cyprus, particularly in the areas of innovation and sustainable development. She also highlighted the broader scope of cooperation, including emergency management and economic development.

Cyprus as a Space Innovation Hub

Professor Hadjimitsis described the agreement as a strategic partnership that bolsters the Centre’s ambition to position Cyprus as a key player in the global space and innovation landscape. The partnership will support the development and deployment of cutting-edge solutions that tackle critical societal and environmental challenges on both a regional and global scale.
