Another Country: A New Production by Alpha Square

Another Country: A New Production by Alpha Square

A Theatrical Reading With 10 Boys in the Courtyard of an English School!

"Another Country" is presented to us by Alpha Square until July 12th. The play by Julian Mitchell was awarded as Play of the Year at the Society of West End Theatre Awards in 1982. Great actors such as Kenneth Branagh, Rupert Everett, Daniel Day Lewis, and Colin Firth have made their debut in this play.

Translated and directed by Andreas Araouzos, ten Cypriot actors will deliver a theatrical reading that depicts the system and camaraderie of boys in an English private school and boarding school in the 1930s. The "stage" will be the veranda of a classroom at the English School of Nicosia, and the audience will watch the reading in a cool courtyard in the evening, starting at sunset, accompanied by a glass of Sacchetto Pinot Grigio white wine or a glass of San Pellegrino.

The play "Another Country" sketches the workings of the system and discrimination, oppression, and pretense, concepts that have changed very little since the 1930s. Students Guy Bennett (a role based on the famous English spy Guy Burgess) and Tommy Judd become friends because both are "outsiders" – outside the system: the former because he is homosexual and the latter because he is a Marxist. The school and the system have traditional ways of dealing with rebels. Responsibilities, guilt, opportunism, and exemplary punishment emerge. How will the victims take care of themselves, how will the idealists betray their principles, how will friends and supporters withdraw from the side of the wronged.
