Dragon Boat Race at Germasogeia Dam Set to Thrill This Sunday

Historic 2km Dragon Boat Competition Joins Cyprus National Championship Lineup

This coming Sunday at the Germasogeia Dam, a 2-kilometer Dragon Boat race will take place as part of the Cyprus National Dragon Boat Championship. The Championship is organized by the Cyprus Dragon Boat Federation, the governing body for Dragon Boat racing in Cyprus.

Dragon Boat is a human-powered watercraft originating from the Pearl River Delta region of China's southern Guangdong province. Typically made of teak wood, different types of wood are used in other parts of China. Dragon Boats are part of a family of traditional long boats found across Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and Puerto Rico. The sport of Dragon Boat racing has its roots in an ancient folk ritual of competing villagers that dates back over 2000 years across Southern China and even further to the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece. Both Dragon Boat races and the ancient Olympics included aspects of religious festivals and community celebrations along with the competitions.
