Events for International Museum Day and European Night of Museums

With The Theme 'Museums For Education And Research'

Events in 27 museums and cultural venues, most with free admission, are planned as part of the celebrations for International Museum Day 2024 (May 18th), which this year has the theme: "Museums for Education and Research" and the European Night of Museums, according to the Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and the Cypriot National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).

As stated in an announcement by the Department and the Committee, the International Council of Museums (ICOM), in its efforts to highlight the role of museums in contemporary society, has established May 18th as International Museum Day since 1977. Through this day, the role of museums as agents of cultural exchange is highlighted, aiming to enhance education, promote mutual understanding, peace, and cooperation among people.

With the theme of the celebrations of International Museum Day 2024, "Museums for Education and Research," museums are highlighted as dynamic cultural and educational institutions, capable of nurturing and developing curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking, providing the public with a comprehensive knowledge experience. This year's celebration of International Museum Day also promotes awareness of a peaceful, empathetic, sustainable world, without exclusions.

Events for International Museum Day are organized annually around May 18th and last from one day to one month. Globally, museum participation grows every year with more than 37,000 museums participating in the 2023 celebrations. In Cyprus, this year's program includes events in 27 different museums and other cultural venues, most with free admission.

The public can visit the Department of Antiquities website www.culture.gov.cy/da for all scheduled events, as well as the websites of other participating museums. Events will also be promoted on the museums' social media channels.
